Gravity’s latest community webinar explored how the project to create the UK’s first smart campus and community will support the government’s ‘clean growth revolution’, helping to drive the UK’s shift towards a zero-carbon economy.
Entitled ‘Gravity: kickstarting a green economy’, speakers at the event explained how the scheme, will be brought forward in a way that places Sedgemoor at the heart of the country’s green economic strategy.
Claire Pearce, Director of Planning and Economic Development at Gravity, started the session, which was held on 21 April 2021, by outlining the vision for Gravity to be a beacon of clean and inclusive growth – and the need to adapt plans approved for the site in 2017.
Claire explained that this vision means shaping Gravity as a ‘an exceptional place’ that will deliver around 4,000 new high-quality jobs in clean growth sectors, as well as being an exemplar of sustainability in its broadest sense, including a focus on people’s wellbeing.
Jonathan Riggall, Director at Stantec, went on to talk about the challenges and opportunities of meeting the UK’s target of net-zero emissions by 2050, including the need to move to the electrification of transport and away from fossil fuels.
Paul Hickson, Assistant Director of Strategic Economic Development at Somerset County Council, detailed the opportunities in Somerset to support clean growth and the importance of Gravity’s future role in Somerset’s Climate Emergency Strategy.
Focusing on Sedgemoor, Stuart Houlet, Planning and Economic Lead for Sedgemoor District Council, discussed the potential for Gravity to help transform the local economy by creating high-value, knowledge-based jobs, helping to build a resilient and future-ready workforce.
Matt Tudor, Director of Commercial Development, Strategy & Partnership at Bridgwater and Taunton College (BTC), explained how BTC is working in partnership with Gravity to create pathways for the local community to access the new opportunities created by Gravity. Matt talked about the need to ‘upskill’ adults and prepare post 16-year olds for a digital future.
‘Gravity: kickstarting the green economy’ was the third in a series of virtual public webinars about Gravity to be held throughout 2021 and is available in full as a recording. These events are part of an extensive process of engagement and consultation that aim to ensure that what is proposed for Gravity creates benefits for the local area and its communities.
